Everything about MUSE

Matthew, Christopher, and Dominic

There is no higher purpose for this page, really; other than I needed to create a parent page under which all the relevant, Muse-related entries could be stored.  Honestly, did you think that Muse could be summarized on one page?

– Shame on you if you did! ;-)

Now go back to the very beginning of the blog HERE and start reading the pages that are neatly stacked up on the right side of your screen.

Showbiz

1999, Taste Media/Mushroom

A mini-coliseum of imagination where riff mayhem and piano beauty met Bellamy’s quivering falsetto head-on over a smorgasboard of blues, shoegazer balladry.  Greek melodies, and shameless pop hooks, Muse’s debut bore a songwriting craftsmanship and confidence that far outstripped the youth of its creators.  And for three people, they made one hell of an inventive racket.

Did you know:  The title track contains highest note ever sung by Matt, a G#.  Ouch!

Origin of Symmetry

2001, Taste Media/Mushroom

A head spinning vortex of 21st century paranoia, futurist expanse, Muse’s sophomore effort fused their love of Big Song Excess with an increasing knack for radio-friendly efficiency to a dazzling degree.  No mean feat when you sound like the bastard offspring of Maria Callas, Air, Rachmaninoff and Queen.  Sometimes all at once.

Did you know:  The strange-sounding intro on Space Dementia is the result of putting Matt’s piano through a Big Muff effect pedal, more commonly used on guitars.

Absolution

2003, Taste Media/East West

Floydian grandeur, Wagnerian bombast, Slayer-baiting metallic rancour, Absolution was a landmark in epic rock adventure delivered with bullet-point intensity and adrenaline.  That it was a concept album that began with the end of the world was no matter; in the remaining 50 minutes, Muse created something spectacular out of the rubble.

Did you knowFor added ‘depth’, the band tried to record Dom Howard’s drum parts underwater, in the studio swimming pool.  Until they realized it sounded crap.

Black Holes and Revelations

2006, Helium-3

A streamlined galaxy quest of guitar tectonics, symphonic apocalyptica and supermassive chart success, Muse’s fourth outing was proof positive that after 15 years the trio not only still had it, but the Knights Of Cydonia’s mutant gene-splice of 70’s rock indulgence and spaghetti Western madness, they were still getting even better.

Did you know:   During recording, Muse toyed briefly with the idea of becoming a jazz band and releasing the album as a three-disc set.  They decided against it.
